How Jupiter Got it’s Name
Many believe the town of Jupiter was named as a derivative from the Celestial Railway or some other astrological event.
Not true! The name was actually the phonetic pronunciation of the word JOBE (pronounced JO-bay).
Most historians agree that the name Jupiter has its origins from when the British controlled most of Florida in the 1700’s.
When Spain ceded Florida to Britain they examined the maps the Spanish had provided for the area and found our local river named the “Rio Jobe”.
It’s believed that the Spanish named the area Jobe after the Jobe Indians. This is where Hobe Sound got its name!
The British had a tendency to Anglicize their words and adjusted the name from Jobe to Jove. Jove, in Roman mythology is the king of the gods and the god of sky and thunder, equivalent to Zeus in Greek traditions. The name Jove is just another name for Jupiter, and such the name is born.
Later, the Celestial Railroad would take its unofficial name on account of the towns it stopped between Jupiter and Juno such as Venus, Mars and Neptune
