The area which today is still called Suni Sands, is located just Southwest shores of the Jupiter Inlet.
Suni Sands is an important part of Jupiter history, as it was the site of some of the first activity in the Jupiter area, including some of the first homes, first businesses and it was the starting point for the Jupiter Lake Worth Railroad, affectionately called the Celestial Railroad.
While we pronounce it “Sunny Sands”, the land that Suni Sands sat on is also known to be archeologically significant.
Suni Sands sit on a shell midden that was once the home of ancient Indians. Due to it’s importance to the tribe, only the biggest chiefs lived here.
Before Suni Sands Trailer Park was born, the site was the winter home of William M. Sperry, of S & H Green Stamp fame. Mr. Sperry was an avid boater and fisherman.
S&H (Sperry & Hutchinson) Green Stamps was a popular trading stamp started in 1896 until the late 1980s. S&H Green Stamps was the first loyalty program for brands in the United States. During the 1960s, the company issued more stamps than the U.S. Postal Service, and distributed 35 million catalogs a year.
When you look at the now vacant land you can still see the stairs that led to the old Sperry estate.
Hobe Sound resident Charlie Modica paid $1.7 million dollars an acre for the 10.4 +/- acre parcel in 2013.
Palm Beach county has been reviewing plans for the property which include 67 residential condominiums, five residential townhouses, a 125 room hotel, a restaurant, and commercial retail.
